Basics of being an effective interviewer

Are you looking to become an effective interviewer? 🤔

Having the ability to ask the right questions and listen to the answers is key to becoming a successful interviewer. 🗣

Below are five essential steps for the basics of mastering the art of interviewing:

1. Do your research 🔎

Take the time to research the candidate, as they will be interviewing you too. This will allow you to draft effective, targeted questions and ensure you are fully prepared for the interview. Plus, the candidate will feel valued if you took the time to do so.

2. Create a comfortable environment 📝

Create a welcoming and relaxed environment. Introduce yourself, explain the structure of the interview and ask the candidate if they have any questions before jumping into the interview.

3. Listen carefully 🤐

Do not interrupt the candidate and allow them to answer the questions in full. This will give you a better understanding of their experience, skills and personality. However, if a candidate starts to go off track it's your responsibility to bring them back in and remind them of your question and time allocated for the meeting.

4. Ask relevant questions ✏

Be sure to ask relevant questions that cover all aspects of the job role. This will enable you to get the information you need to make an informed decision.

5. Pause to listen to their questions ❓

Make sure you allocate at least 10 to 20 mins for the candidate to ask their questions and hard stop the interview to allow this. Remember, an interview is a two-way street, they should be given a fair chance to see if the role also suits them and what they are looking for.

6. Follow up 📬

After the interview, it is important to follow up with the candidate. Send a thank you email and let them know when they will hear back from you.

By following these steps and using your interpersonal skills, you will be well on your way to becoming an effective interviewer and helping you build a good company brand. 🤝
